15-year-old Jessica Day moves with her family after her mother is employed. Soon after the move, Jessica awakens to find time frozen and rain stopped in mid air.The next night, it happens again. Leaving her room, she finds that her family is frozen and the only other living thing is a cat, which leads her out of her house.  Shortly after the cat transforms into a snake, revealing that it is actually a slither. While running the slither tries to attack her and Jessica is rescued by the "midnighters" who soon become her 
friends.

As I was reading this chapter I was astounded by the vivid images that it was projecting throughout my head. As I read more and more of the chapter the more I was anxious to know what was going to happen next
